Junior guard Mara Celis scored 13 points and senior guard Laura Hart added 12 points and six rebounds to lead Bishop Ireton to a 49-42 victory over McNamara in the first round of the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference tournament on Thursday in Forestville.

Bishop Ireton, which snapped a 70-game conference losing streak earlier this season, trailed 23-20 heading into the fourth quarter, but scored 29 points in the final eight minutes to earn the win.

“The momentum changed and we started being the aggressors,” Bishop Ireton Coach Derek Campbell said. “It’s always good to make small steps, and that’s what we seem to be doing.”

The 10th-seeded Cardinals (6-23) will advance to play No. 2 seed St. John’s (21-7) in a quarterfinal game on Saturday afternoon at Gonzaga, while McNamara ends its season 17-12.
