Coles District town hall meeting set for Monday

Prince William County’s fiscal 2013 budget and proposed tax rate will be the subjects of a town hall meeting for Coles District residents at 7 p.m. Monday at the Coles District Volunteer Fire Department, 13712 Dumfries Rd., Manassas.

Michelle Casciato, the county’s budget director, will discuss the budget and answer questions.

Stop, cover and hold

for statewide tornado drill

The annual statewide tornado drill is scheduled for 9:45 a.m. Tuesday. Individuals, businesses and schools are encouraged to participate, Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue officials said.

The National Weather Service starts the drill by sending a test tornado warning about 9:45 a.m. that will trigger tone alerts and messages on NOAA weather radios. Local radio and TV stations will then be prompted to broadcast a test message.

During the drill, participants should go immediately to a safe area — a windowless interior room, closet or hallway in the lowest level of your home, office or school — and take a “drop, cover and hold” position, officials said.

Supervisors oppose increase in water rate

Virginia American Water recently filed a request with the State Corporation Commission for a general rate increase of about 15.9 percent for Prince William County and the Alexandria, Hopewell and Eastern districts.

The group is seeking an increase for Prince William, specifically the Neabsco and Coles districts, of 24.81 percent or $1,841,276. The Board of County Supervisors opposes the rate increase.

A public hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. Sept. 25 at the State Corporation Commission’s Courtroom, Tyler Building, 1300 East Main St., Richmond. Residents may attend and speak at the meeting or submit written comments on or before Sept. 18 to Joel Peck, Clerk, State Corporation Commission, c/o Document Control Center, P.O. Box 2118, Richmond, Va. 23218. Reference case number PUE-2011-00127.

Alzheimer’s Association honors Home Instead owner

Jack St. Clair, owner of Home Instead Senior Care Prince William and Fauquier Counties, was one of 13 people recognized as Inspiring Champions by the Alzheimer’s Association National Capital Area.

The Manassas resident was honored for his leadership of the Prince William County Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s. St. Clair has chaired the county’s walk since it began in 2010. In two years, the event has raised more than $123,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association.

The 2012 Walk will be Oct. 13 at the Harris Pavilion in Old Town Manassas.
