The open-mike mishap

March 28, 2012

Regarding the March 27 news article “President’s message to Putin caught on open mike”: This is not the first time an open mike has put President Obama in hot water, and I doubt it will be the last.

Was Mr. Obama referring only to how difficult it is to get things done during an election cycle? Russian President Dmitry Medvedev certainly knows that elections in the United States are overly drawn out and overwhelming for the candidates, even incumbents. There was no reason for Mr. Obama to imply this.

While a European missile-defense system is not the top priority of most Americans right now, there is some public opinion on the matter, most of it concerning a negative attitude toward Russia.

In essence, what Mr. Obama said is that, once reelected, he will be able to go directly against what U.S. citizens believe, something that doesn’t sound very promising to potential voters.
