As a forward on the Georgetown Visitation basketball team, Ana Hagerup is quick to utilize her spin move to create space in the post. The 6-foot sophomore has found the tactic works just as well on the lacrosse field.
With time winding down in overtime on Wednesday against top-ranked St. St. Stephen’s/St. Agnes, Hagerup did what came naturally and came up with a huge play.
The midfielder spun off a defender and fired a shot inside the right post with eight seconds remaining in the extra period to give the No. 2 Cubs a 12-11 victory in an Independent School League AA matchup in Alexandria. It was the first league loss for St. Stephen’s/St. Agnes since 1995.
“I wanted to win it so bad,” said Hagerup, who finished with three goals and three assists. “I ripped it as hard as I could and it went in.”
Hagerup’s goal finished off a game defined by momentum swings down the stretch. The Cubs appeared poised to celebrate the milestone victory in regulation after they scored seven unanswered goals midway through the second half to take a four-goal lead.
