The second-ranked St. Stephen’s/St. Agnes girls’ lacrosse team captured its sixth straight VISAA Division 1 title with a 15-4 win over Bishop Ireton on Saturday at Old Dominion University. Junior Carly Reed had five goals and senior Michele Phillips added four more as the Saints closed the season with their 17th straight victory.
St. Stephen’s/St. Agnes (26-3) dominated down the stretch, bouncing back from an overtime loss to Georgetown Visitation on April 18 with a perfect finish. The Saints, who hadn’t lost in league play since 1995, won 16 of those games by double digits, including Wednesday’s 18-6 victory over the Cubs in the Independent School League AA final.
“We just were not quite together as a team” for the first meeting, said Coach Kathy Jenkins, who earned her 600th career win earlier this month. “Sometimes a loss helps pull everyone together. After that, I think they did a really good job preparing for the rest of the season.”
