A 28-year-old Herndon man pleaded not guilty Friday to charges stemming from the shooting last week of a security guard at the downtown Washington headquarters of the Family Research Council.

Floyd Lee Corkins II, who has been detained at the D.C. jail since the Aug. 15 shooting, wore an orange jumpsuit and said nothing during his brief arraignment in the District’s federal court on a federal charge of transporting a firearm and ammunition across state lines and D.C. charges of assault with intent to kill while armed and possession of a firearm during a violent crime.

His attorney, David Walker Bos, entered not guilty pleas for Corkins to all charges and told U.S. Magistrate Judge Alan Kay that his client had been found competent to stand trial during a recent psychological assessment. The judge set a status conference for Oct. 1, but Corkins is likely to appear in coming weeks before U.S. District Judge Richard W. Roberts, who will preside over the case.
