Potomac School uses new look against Maret, Good Counsel standouts recovering

The Potomac School threw a series of new offensive looks at Maret in a 42-7 Mid-Atlantic Conference win on Saturday. The Panthers (3-2, 2-0) lined up with a standard pro-style offense and ran the ball early against the Frogs (3-2, 0-1), then aimed to neutralize Maret defensive end Tre Bowens – who entered the contest with 12 sacks in four games – by putting running backs Johnny Read and Jalen Broom at quarterback and running direct-snaps and misdirection calls.

And it worked. Read and Broom combined for 123 yards rushing, and opened up the passing game for junior Kevin Havermann, who also led the team in rushing with 91 yards.

It was the most complete performance of Havermann’s short career under center. He started the last four games of last season, but he and the Panthers’ offense struggled in two losses to open the season.

That’s when Coach Pat Duffy started to scheme ways to alleviate pressure from the shoulders of Havermann, using more creativity with Read and Broom in two straight wins, and also emphasizing that Havermann (6-1, 170) use his legs more. Havermann has rushed for more yards (252) than he has passed for this season (210) and has accounted for six total touchdowns.

“I’m obviously not built like a running back,” said Havermann, whose team will see undefeated Sidwell Friends (5-0) next week. “I think with passing, we’re not as strong. I think right now, we’re just kind of drawing up plays offensively to help enhance our passing game.”

O’Daniel, Carr recovering from injuries

A pair of Good Counsel starting linebackers are recovering from injuries that caused them to miss the second half of the top-ranked Falcons’ 13-10 win over DeMatha Friday.

Dorian O’Daniel, who also plays running back, has a sprained shoulder, and Darien Carr has a sprained ankle. Both underwent X-rays, which revealed no breaks or tears.

Good Counsel Coach Bob Milloy said he talked to O’Daniel Sunday and that O’Daniel “felt a lot better.” Milloy is hopeful to have O’Daniel back this week — the Falcons (5-1) host McNamara (2-4) on Friday — but he’s not sure. O’Daniel and Carr both went to homecoming, Milloy noted, “and they seemed to make it through that.”

“Both of [the injuries] are concerns, I can promise you that,” Milloy said. “But whether they can play, I don’t know.”
