Operating a bus in parts of the District can be hazardous, and the latest example came Friday night when a driver who had just finished work was struck by a bullet.

The off-duty driver was hit near the Anacostia Metro station, a terminus for several bus routes. As the driver was walking on Howard Road SE about 9 p.m., a shot was fired during a dispute among youths, Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said.

The bus operator, who was not believed to be the target, was hit in the leg. The wound was not considered life-threatening, Stessel said.

He said authorities believed that the shot came from Shannon Place, which intersects Howard Road near the station. No information was available about any possible arrests.

Rocks have been thrown at buses in parts of the region for years, but Metro has said the problem is particularly acute in parts of Southeast Washington.
