Mike Bonavia has stepped down as Sherwood’s head football coach after two seasons at the Sandy Spring school.
In a phone conversation Wednesday, Bonavia, 54, cited a chance to “pursue other professional advancements in Montgomery County Schools,” as the primary reason for leaving the post, and on Tuesday notified his players of his resignation.
“I have an opportunity for a leadership role in the county,” said Bonavia, who declined to elaborate on specific positions in the school district.
Sherwood athletic director Kathy Green could not immediately be reached for comment.
Bonavia took over at Sherwood for Marc Thomas in April 2011, and immediately found success at the 4A power. Sherwood went 6-4 in 2011, and finished 9-3 this season. The Warriors beat Catonsville in a 4A North region semifinal before falling to Westminster in the region final.
