A wealthy Republican donor gave another $25,000 to GOP lieutenant gubernatorial nominee E.W. Jackson in June, according to the candidate’s amended campaign finance disclosure report.
The contribution brings the total donations from Peter L. Via of Roanoke to Jackson’s campaign to $75,000 — about 20 percent of Jackson’s fundraising total of about $364,000, and more than half of his June fundraising total of about $142,000.
Jackson, a minister from Chesapeake, was outraised in June by his Democratic opponent, state Sen. Ralph S. Northam of Norfolk, who reported more than $226,000 in donations for the month. The candidates are battling for control of the Senate and would serve as tie-breaker in the evenly-divided chamber that often votes along partisan lines.
Via, a Roanoke financier, is Jackson’s single-largest individual contributor, and has donated $225,000, mostly to Republicans, since 2001.
Via’s wife, retired realtor Lynn W. Via, has donated $126,000 to Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, the Republican nominee for governor, and has donated more than $430,000 to Republican candidates in the past decade.
