COLUMBIA, S.C. — Inside the Capital Beltway, the race for the Republican nomination for president has been cast in recent days as a showdown between Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney . But in Columbia, S. C., it's more of a courtship — between Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) and South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R). Bachmann has repeatedly made known her admiration for Haley, who has cultivated a loyal following among tea partyers and other conservative Republicans for her sharp...

The former Pennsylvania senator told the Post earlier this week that he is shooting for a top-five finish in the Ames Straw Poll on Saturday. More realistically, he probably needs a top-three or –fourth-place — finish to be considered a legitimate Iowa contender. That means, at Tuesday night's debate, Santorum needs to reclaim some of the conservatives who may have migrated to Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.). The best thing that could happen for Santorum at the Iowa debate is for Bachmann to...

In an otherwise interesting piece by Ned Martel about the business of distributing new films to Washington [ "Coming to a theater nowhere near you," Outlook, Dec. 11], one turn of phrase left a somewhat rancid taste in my month. DES MOINES — It wasn't an announcement, exactly, but an announcement of an announcement, which sounded pretty close to the same thing. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), whose flirtation with running for president has generated strong buzz among conservative activists in Iowa, told reporters Thursday night that she plans an "all-important announcement which will happen in the month of June, which I am pleased to tell you tonight will be made in Iowa. And I can also tell you that announcement will be made in...

DOVER, N.H. — They don't like identity politics and aren't crazy about the word "feminist. " But a lot of conservative women here can't help but rejoice that they may have a couple of tough-talking, tea-drinking mothers to choose from in the Republican primary. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota is on the verge of announcing her intentions, and former vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin is contemplating a bid. If either runs, it would be the first time since Elizabeth Dole's bid in 1999...
