Gary Weaver could have told Bill Gates he was about to create an international stink. On a visit this week to South Korea, the Microsoft founder met with the country's new president, Park Geun-hye . A photograph shows a beaming Gates and Park engaged in a "one-handed shake," as it's become known among South Korea's sore social media. Take a look at the video above (which oddly reminds me of the early 90s) and you'll see that IBM has taken a page from Evernote's book . Its research labs have been working on a project codenamed "PENSIEVE" that promises to algorithmically construct digital address books from photographs of business cards and the people they represent. While not production ready for at least another year, PENSIEVE will get rid of that stack of business cards sitting unhelpfully on your desk.

It happens at every trade show: I say no, but it doesn't matter--everyone I meet sticks a business card in my hand anyway. At this year's CES, I collected over 80. Coincidentally, every year theNeat ReceiptsPR people pitch me on their little scanner and software that scans, recognizes, and manages business cards. Each year I find excuses not to try one: I have plenty of things cluttering up my desk already. The device insists on using a USB connection on the back of the PC and I'm running out of free ports.

Reader: I recently bumped into a gentleman on the street and was involved in a brief, professional discussion. Business cards were exchanged, and I assumed that might be the last of the interaction. Since then, he has called and e-mailed several times for a lunch meeting. I'm not sure what the meeting would be for; we are not in similar fields. Today, he called three times. I finally answered on the third call and politely refused a lunch invitation, saying I had work commitments to complete before heading out of...
