Americans Mardy Fish and Sam Querrey will return for Washington's hard-court classic this summer, lending familiar faces to a tournament that's receiving a major makeover. With a new title sponsor , the city's long-running tennis tournament (formerly the Legg Mason Tennis Classic) is now known as the Citi Open. The full field will be announced Monday. Just 21, Ryan Harrison has a pretty mature understanding of what it takes to make it on the ATP tour. "You've gotta love the process," Harrison said after his 6-3, 7-5 win over former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt on Tuesday in a first-round match at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Northwest. "No matter how tense any moment can get out there, it's what we live for, it's what we play for. A familiar figure popped into the media tent Sunday afternoon at the Tennis Center at College Park, about 10 minutes after Nadia Petrova had discussed winning her first WTA championship in three years. The visitor? Petrova. Seems the Russian forgot to lug away the crystal vase she earned by dispatching top-seeded Shahar Peer , 7-5, 6-2, to win the Citi Open , a first-year event. But he began the week wondering if the long flight and hot, sticky weather might keep that form from showing up at the Citi Open . So far, Querrey has been able to keep up the momentum. The 24-year-old American beat Germany's Benjamin Becker , 6-4, 6-3, on Thursday in a second-round match at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis...

First came the rains, postponing play for more than two hours Monday afternoon. Then the temporary lights erected around the stadium court would not turn on, suspending play near dusk for another hour before the problem was solved. Although the first day of main-draw competition at the Citi Open did not conclude until after midnight, Varvara Lepchenko had plenty of patience. After all, the 25-year-old from Uzbekistan has waited much longer for something much more...

Tim Smyczek knew that if he kept the match close, it would be difficult for his opponent, Jarmere Jenkins, to continue hitting winners at a blistering pace. Smyczek's game plan worked as he defeated Jenkins, a recent Virginia graduate, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, to advance to the main draw of the Citi Open at William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center. This marked the second tournament in a row for which the world's 124th-ranked player has qualified. He also reached the first round last...
