The College of Southern Maryland is planning events next month at its three campuses to thank donors who helped push the school beyond its capital campaign goal to raise $7.7 million in less than two years. Events will be held June 11 in La Plata, June 18 in Prince Frederick and June 23 in Leonardtown. Coinciding with the college's 50th anniversary, the Campaign for the Next 50 Years raised 54 percent more than its goal. "Quite frankly, we are overwhelmed by the generosity of our community and the full support that we have realized through this campaign," said campaign Chairman Mike Besche, chief executive of Besche Oil. The company pledged $105,000 to help operate the school's technical training center near the La Plata campus.

Starting Monday night, Calvert Memorial Hospital will allow a team of doctors and nurses to help care for patients in its intensive care unit -- from Delaware. The Prince Frederick hospital is the first in Maryland to go live with the eICU program, which will electronically connect six of the eight rooms in its intensive care unit to a monitoring center in Wilmington. The program won't replace services at Calvert Memorial, said Ed Grogan, vice president of information services at the hospital.

Eva Irene Davis, a longtime philanthropist and the face of Capt. Billy's Crab House in Newburg, died Jan. 1. She was 72. Davis, known to legions of Charles County residents as Miss Irene, had received a diagnosis of ovarian cancer in October, friends said. Although she had grown increasingly ill, she celebrated New Year's Eve with friends at her La Plata home. She died the next morning. Davis was not a Charles native -- she spent the first 35 years of her life in North Carolina, the District and Prince George's County.
