D.C. United liked what it was seeing from Kyle Porter, but as the Canadian midfielder gained comfort as a starter in his first MLS season, Coach Ben Olsen pushed him to take the next step. Olsen's message: "Don't be okay with just being a starter now. " Porter, 23, was quietly filling the void left by injuries to Nick DeLeon and Chris Pontius. United, though, needed more from him. Porter has made steady gains in recent matches and, with family visiting from Toronto last weekend, scored his first career goal against...

D.C. United was heading down a familiar and ruinous path Sunday, falling behind early in the second half when a ball bonked off a defender's head and into the net. But in a season that has gone so terribly wrong, United had a refreshing response. Kyle Porter's sliding volley five minutes later earned a 1-1 draw with Sporting Kansas City in front of 13,612 at RFK Stadium, ending United's losing streak at a club-record seven and securing a point for the first time in nine weeks.

D.C. United has conceded a flood of early goals this spring, but the problems began sprouting soon after the club arrived at training camp in Florida more than three months ago. "It was an epidemic even before the season started," Coach Ben Olsen said Friday. "It was an issue we preached about the second week in the preseason because we all smelled it and didn't like the vibe we had from the start. " The issue subsided at the start of the regular season before resurfacing with devastating effects.

In the space of one short offseason, D.C. United has plunged from the brink of the MLS Cup final to the bottom of the league , from stout defense to crumbling resistance, from invincibility at home to booing fans. In a performance as dreary as the wet weather, United lost its sixth straight Wednesday night, a 4-0 stinker to the Houston Dynamo before an announced crowd of 10,116 at RFK Stadium. United (1-7-1) continued to surrender goals in the early stages, falling behind 2-0 after 28 minutes.

KANSAS CITY, KAN. – D.C. United made notable strides in almost all areas Friday after several dour performances this spring and was on the verge of sneaking off with a valuable road point Friday night. But in an excruciating instant, United cracked. A poor pass, a missed tackle, a sharp cross and a poised one-timer by Sporting Kansas City's Claudio Bieler in the 89th minute resulted in a 1-0 defeat in front of 18,988 spectators. "It was the best effort to date," Coach Ben Olsen...

Hamdi Salihi's departure from D.C. United has been in the works for some time, but until a contract resolution is reached, the well-paid Albanian striker will be tethered to the club. Salihi was not present for fitness tests at George Mason University's field house on Friday morning — the first formal gathering of United's players this preseason and, by extension, the first acknowledgment that he would not return this year. "We just don't project him competing for a starting spot," General Manager Dave Kasper said.
