After Wilson's bus was late to arrive at Cardozo High for a neutral site showdown with Dunbar on Friday night, the team frantically filed into the stadium and began gearing up on the sideline. Bags and equipment were scattered across the track. It wasn't until 15 minutes before kickoff that the entire Wilson roster was on the field warming up, and by that point, their opponent had been running pregame drills for more than an hour. But the Tigers were fashionably late in more ways than one in their final regular season game, including an 80-yard kickoff return from Travon Parker in the final minutes that saved Wilson in a thrilling 20-13 win. "I seen a hole, and I squirted through," said Parker of his game-winning return.

Standing at midfield on Eastern High's football field on Thursday afternoon, Dunbar junior defensive back Carlos Atkinson couldn't believe what was happening. The Crimson Tide had every reason not to be here, yet it was celebrating another Turkey Bowl victory. A fired head coach . A forfeited game . The loss of ineligible players . Though much of the adversity was of its own making, the Crimson Tide overcame it. "You still want me to sing?" asks Dunbar junior Monique Garey, 16, as she walks quickly toward the press box. It's less than five minutes before kickoff and Garey, the school's usual national anthem singer has just gotten to the field. H.D. Woodson quarterback Rashad Cooper has thrown for over 300 yards and rushed for over 100 more in his first two games this season, which he admits is a sign of the times more than anything else. As a sophomore last season, Cooper rushed for more yards (149) under center than passing (140) in limited time as the Warriors backup, and his speed was starting to earn Cooper a reputation as a player who enjoyed the scramble. "I'm trying to be more of a quarterback first, throw the ball more.

London Freeland dropped the hammer while anchoring Dunbar on the 4x400-meter relay — the sophomore turned a five-second deficit into nearly a two-second victory — and then spent the next half hour paying for it at the D.C. Interscholastic Athletic Association championships Thursday at Spingarn. The victory came with a heavy price tag. Freeland vomited a few times before being carried to a table beneath a medical tent and having an athletic trainer rub an ice pack across her neck and shoulders for the next 30 minutes.

All the pieces were in place for Davon Fuller 's big night. The Dunbar senior defensive back had his family in the stands at Cardozo for Friday's game against Coolidge , a rematch of last year's Turkey Bowl. Mayor Vincent Gray was pacing the track. It was the Crimson Tide's homecoming — and at halftime, Fuller would be crowned king. But as he dropped back into coverage midway through the second quarter, all Fuller could think about were the interceptions he had dropped in recent weeks.

In his one month of crash-course training, quarterback Roman Williams said he knew of DeMatha's offensive calls and was familiar with the three different wristbands of plays. But after throwing two touchdown passes and guiding the 14th-ranked Stags to a come-from-behind, 27-19 nonleague victory at Dunbar in Northwest Washington on Friday night, Williams needed some extra guidance from an assistant coach to get his teammates to line up in a victory, kneel-down formation.
