After Forest Park got the final stop it needed to secure its 55-53 victory over host Woodbridge last night, pushing the 10th-ranked Bruins a step closer to clinching another Virginia AAA Cardinal District title, the players walked glumly off the court. There were no high-fives, no hugs, no cheers. The Bruins' demeanor after the game matched their intensity during it, when they allowed Woodbridge to stay close only four days after losing their first district regular season game in more than two years.

Singles night yielded a date in the Virginia AAA Northwest Region tournament for Forest Park on Thursday night. The Bruins collected 16 hits, only one for extra bases, in a 17-7 win over defending state runner-up Woodbridge in the Cardinal District championship. Forest Park scored 12 runs in the final three innings. "We were just finding the right holes and the right places to hit the ball," second-year Bruins Coach Sonny Moss said. One by one, the three players who meant so much to the Forest Park girls' basketball team the past four seasons emerged from a locker room together for the last time Saturday afternoon with tears spilling from their eyes. First came senior forward Gerda Gatling, sniffling as she spoke to reporters after the 10th-ranked Bruins' 57-49 loss to Lake Taylor in the Virginia AAA quarterfinals at Freedom-Woodbridge High, a season- and career-ending loss that felt premature. Forest Park senior right-hander Bobby Schwier tossed a no-hitter in a 10-0 win shortened to five innings by the 10-run rule, the fifth five-inning victory for the Bruins this season.

Headed into the summer, there was no telling what kind of football team Stonewall Jackson might have this season. There were several seniors that had gone unbeaten on the freshman team three years ago, but when you haven't posted a winning varsity season since 2004, doubt hovers. Then 6-foot-3 senior receiver J.R. Washington decided to return to football after two years of concentrating on basketball. Senior Keenen Boyce , a capable running back-linebacker, moved in from Georgia.

Forest Park owns 11 of the last 12 Virginia AAA Cardinal District regular season volleyball titles. Osbourn Park claimed the other in 2010. When the two rivals hit the court for the first of two regular-season matches on Thursday night at Osbourn Park, the result should once again go a long way toward deciding the 2012 regular season champion. Both the Yellow Jackets (9-2) and Bruins (6-3) are coming off four challenging tests at the Loudoun Valley Invitational on Sept.
