It's past last call at Sticky Rice DC in Northeast, but no one is going home. The crowd is downing shots of Smirnoff vodka, and the music is blasting. An obscure song by Sir Mix-A-Lot comes on. "This is my jam," a girl in ripped black tights says. Outside the bar, the music escapes with a heavy thump, thump into the new heart of the H Street corridor. This is not what the city imagined. When the music finally fades, most of the partyers climb into cabs back to Northwest. They zip past blocks of buildings that tumble out of the...

The D.C. region's transportation planners often say they want to give travelers more choices . In transit, those options include rapid bus service in dedicated lanes, light-rail lines and streetcars. All the major jurisdictions have such transit projects in various stages of development, but the one likely to appear first is the D.C. streetcar along H Street and Benning Road NE, north of Capitol Hill . The District Department of Transportation's schedule calls for putting cars on the tracks...

A while ago, it was natural to think of H Street NE as a hub of the District's shopping, dining and night life. But that was sometime around the Truman administration. A few years later, the end of segregation took a toll on the neighborhood, as African Americans and other minorities became freer to take their business elsewhere. The 1968 riots nearly finished off H Street for good. And then, many years later, something happened. In 2012, President Obama dined there twice . USA Today dubbed H Street the country's most...

Two males stabbed each other Wednesday night during a fight that happened near the bustling nightlife of a Northeast neighborhood. D.C. police responded to the 900 block of 7th Street, about a block from H Street commercial corridor, for the report of a stabbing about 8:30 p.m., said Officer Hugh Carew, a spokesman. Officers found a man with suffering from serious stab wounds at that location, but later found a second victim who fled the scene to the 800 block of 9th Street. The second victim's age and condition were not...

The H Street shuttle is a D.C. Council budget earmark worthy of review in light of the city's projected multi-million-dollar budget shortfall. It's also a compelling example of how District politicians cater to narrow interests even when the spending contributes, albeit unintentionally, to this city's racial and class divide. First, two stipulations. I understand why owners of new restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues along the H Street corridor in Northeast worry that the city's two-year streetscaping project might hit them hard...

Bruce Robey, 65, who founded the District's Voice of the Hill newspaper and helped start the revival of H Street in Northeast Washington by establishing a theater, died Sept. 21 at Washington Hospital Center after a heart attack. He lived in the District. Mr. Robey and his wife, Adele, who jointly owned a graphic arts business and were active in the arts community, used their retirement nest egg to buy the old French's restaurant on H Street in 2002. They invested their labor and bartered with a community action group...

The H Street Playhouse is relocating to 2020 Shannon Place SE in Anacostia . In the face of escalating rent, H Street founder Adele Robey was forced out of the Northeast neighborhood she (and her husband, who died in 2009) had helped to revitalize. Robey said she felt positive about the move before a news conference Monday, around the corner from the soon-to-be theater, which is now a warehouse. "For many reasons, it feels right," she said, not the least of which is the serendipity of moving to the neighborhood...

It's a trailer for a typical sitcom: A few apparently unattached individuals just happen to be in the same restaurant at the same time. A young man with a phony accent pulls out a gun and holds five of them hostage. Cut: One girl is toting a pail of water down the street. Cut! There's a guy who ends up in just his underwear. Is the restaurant in Manhattan? Hollywood? No, we're at 1353 H St. NE, waiting for the plot to unfold in a new show titled — wait for it — " H Street . " "Five people who would usually never...

District developer Jair Lynch plans to build 240 apartments on H Street Northeast, as interest grows in the corridor slated to get streetcar service in 2013 . Last month, Jair Lynch Partners bought three brick office buildings on the south side of H Street, between Sixth and Seventh streets, for $51.5 million. The properties had been owned by a company affiliated with the Camaliers, a local real estate family. It bought the properties for about $42 million in 2005, but never began...

A District man charged in the fatal shooting of a popular H Street delicatessen owner pleaded guilty Friday to second-degree murder in D.C. Superior Court. Steven Williams, 46, admitted that he killed Hae Soon Lim, 64, on June 14 by shooting her in the back of the neck. Lim owned Grace's Deli in the 700 block of H Street NE. Authorities said video from a crime-surveillance camera a block away showed Lim's car pulling up to the deli around 5:25 a.m. the day she was killed. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael C. Liebman...

Giant is coming to H Street NE, but it looks as if the grocery store might need a little more "quality" control. In big, purple letters over the entrance of the store, which is set to open soon, the chain misspelled one of its own slogans, calling itself the " quailty food people. " No, the store will not be some sort of quailcentric Giant outpost, notwithstanding its location along the sizzling H Street corridor. Robin Givhan, a Washington Post contributing writer, noted...

Retro music draws some of the biggest crowds in town, whether it's the Legwarmers selling out the State Theatre for a night of '80s covers or DJs packing the 9:30 Club with an all-'90s dance party. But no venue is as invested in the good old days as Fever , an H Street NE bar where every night is old-school night, and DJs play music only from the '70s, '80s and '90s. "There's a good number of 30-somethings about, but what I've heard from my peers is that there's not a lot of venues that cater...

In a cramped rehearsal room at Georgetown University, a cast of a dozen is rolling through the opening scenes of Scena Theatre's new production of " A Clockwork Orange . " The actors, nearly all men, punch and kick one another in slow, violent bursts. They drag their female castmates across the floor. The menace is palpable — until, without warning, they all break into song. " A Clockwork Orange ," as author Anthony Burgess envisioned it, was never supposed to look like Stanley...

The H Street Playhouse has new digs and a new name to go with them. When the theater opens shop at 2020 Shannon Pl. in March, it will be under a new moniker: Anacostia Playhouse. Owner Adele Robey has been deliberating over the name change since announcing the relocation in July . Although contenders included a play on the catchy "2020" and "the Shannon Place Theater," Robey decided the name needed to embrace the new geographic identity of the institution. "We branded ourselves...

Two people on the sidewalk on busy H Street NE were injured yesterday when a car left the roadway, jumped the curb and struck them, according to accounts from police and startled witnesses. Two people from the car were also reported injured, and a building was damaged. The incident was touched off about 12:45 p.m. when a car that was going east collided with a vehicle that was coming out of an H Street driveway, said Officer Kenny Bryson, a D.C. police spokesman. The eastbound car then mounted the sidewalk, police...

This article originally ran on March 23, 1986. The alley where Catherine Fuller was brutally murdered on a rainy afternoon nearly 1 1/2 years ago has been cleaned and dirtied again. On a recent afternoon, the park where her assailants met daily — young men known as the "Eighth and H Crew" — was sanctuary only to a man dressed in Army fatigues who muttered to himself and said his name was "John. " Three months after the trial of Fuller's murderers,...

Reports by D.C. police of a promising lead in the shooting death of a popular Northeast Washington deli owner in June has renewed the family's hope that the killer will soon be found, but it also has evoked a flood of painful memories. The victim's son, Peter D. Lim, said relatives have been concentrating on trying to sell the shuttered shop on H Street. He said detectives told him two weeks ago that they linked a man to the crime scene through DNA. "We haven't had a chance to deal with...
