Chris Baker squared up near the free throw line during a Hammond boys' basketball practice recently and proceeded to take jump shots. One after another, the balls swished through the hoop, 11 out of 12. Then he switched to the baseline, from a little deeper. More snaps of twine, 13 of 17. Baker's been hitting shots in games, too. For the past two seasons, the 5-foot-10 guard has been among Howard County's leading scorers, averaging more than 20 points per game. Now, his team is sharing in that success, and poised to return to the...

As a freshman she was always a little nervous in the circle, but after leading Northern through the playoffs and to the Maryland 3A title last season, Schmeiser exudes a cool confidence. "The whole mentality coming in as a freshman was different. I was always scared to disappoint the seniors," Schmeiser said. "It's definitely a lot more comfortable to come in with all those experiences and getting to play with so...

Stephanie Speierman, Hammond It will be tough for Speierman to trump her sophomore season last year. It began with her emerging to lead Hammond to its first Howard County and Maryland 2A titles, and becoming the county's first state champion. Along the way, she set the single-season state record for strikeouts (426), matched the mark of 23 victories and threw a perfect game in the state championship, just the third time the feat has been accomplished. She wasn't a bad hitter either, batting .660 with 28 runs and...
