Every device has its pros and cons. Here are five reasons to buy — and not to buy — the latest iPad. Reasons to buy: 1. The display: If you're really into photos or video, then the screen is probably the single-most compelling reason to upgrade. Apple says that the iPad screen has more pixels than an HDTV. 2. Dictation: There hasn't been much attention paid to this little feature, probably because everyone was bummed that Siri wasn't in the new iPad. But dictation will go far on the iPad, as many people find...

Cable customers may soon be able to watch "Gray's Anatomy" and "Scandal" on their iPhones and iPads in real time, according to reports that ABC is planning to let some viewers watch local broadcasts through their Apple devices. The service is called Watch ABC and will at first be available only to viewers in Philadelphia and New York, the New York Times reported. What it won't be, according to reports, is a way for users to get around their cable subscriptions: Those who fire up the app will have to verify that...

Readers who insist on visiting the beach this summer — there is really nothing to see except sand and water, but I digress — need to make some fundamental decisions not just about what they want to read while dry-roasting themselves in the sun (new John Grisham vs. new Toni Morrison ) but about how (e-reader device vs. Gutenberg device). That we even need to contemplate Beach Content Delivery Systems (BCDS) speaks to the world in which we now live, with 21 percent of Americans reading at least one e-book a year,...

The ideas came in five-minute bursts, as representatives from companies big and small took their turns at the podium, seeking to receive a little recognition at the Northern Virginia Technology Council's annual "Destination Innovation" event. One promised an alternative to my cluttered e-mail inbox. Another, a cellphone-based banking system for places in the developing world where people still rely largely on cash. A start-up called Oculis Labs showed off some you-have-to-see-to-believe software that...

Apple made its iPad mini official on Tuesday, after months of speculation that the company would release a smaller tablet. The new mini tablet has a 7.9-inch display, runs on an A5 chip and was built with the words "light" and "thin" in mind. Here's a look at the pros and cons of Apple's latest gadget. It's portable: At 0.68 pounds and 0.28 inches thick, the tablet is built for portability. That means it's good for commuters and, as Apple made a point of highlighting Tuesday, for kids.

The dust is settling following Apple's iPad announcement on Wednesday; here are some of the most frequently asked questions floating around about the tablet in one easy guide. Er...what should I call it?: There's been quite a bit of confusion over what, exactly, is Apple calling its new iPad. The answer is: the iPad. Really. It seems that Apple is doing away with numbering its tablet devices and taking a marketing tack like it already does with its non-mobile devices like the MacBook Pro or the iMac, which don't ever have...

If history is a guide, Apple this week will introduce some upgrades to the iPad that perhaps only a techie will fully grasp — but that will draw millions of new customers anyway. That swooning interest may say just as much about an often overlooked innovation — price — as about the features of Apple's products. Starting at $499, the iPad has hit a sweet spot. It is drawing many users who would have opted for laptops and PCs. Yet it makes a lot of money for Apple.

Embarrassed at how my Spanish had deteriorated over the years, I recently decided to download a few translator apps for iPad and iPod Touch before a trip to Spain. I browsed around the App Store, downloading English-Spanish editions of Google Translate , SpeechTrans and Jibbigo , three of the most popular apps. I briefly considered iLingual, the one where you take a photo of your mouth and then hold the iPhone or iPod Touch up to your face while the screen animates your lips in the foreign language.

Last week, Apple chief executive Tim Cook took the stage and announced the new iPad in San Francisco. Even though the device looks and acts like the previous version, there's a lot that's new under the surface. For starters, the new iPad boasts a magical 9.7-inch "Retina Display" screen with 2048-by-1536 resolution. That's a million more pixels than an HDTV. The tablet also offers a greatly improved camera on its back (a 5 megapixel shooter with technology...

WASHINGTON — Goodbye, No. 2 pencils. Hello, iPads. Starting as early as spring 2015, the ACT college admissions exam will go digital, reflecting students' tech savvy and the demand for quicker results. The tests will still have the familiar multiple-choice options for college hopefuls but they will also expand to include interactive portions, such as a simulated science lab for students to conduct experiments or space for students to explain concepts in their own words. "The days of paper-and-pencil admission...

Part of the fun of Apple rumors is trying to figure out not only the specs of the next device, but also just what the company is going to call its next big thing. Apple doesn't come up with crazy names for its products (see: every other device maker), but the amount of energy that goes into puzzling out what combination of product name and number will come out of the next event is staggering — especially after the iPhone 4S vs. iPhone 5 debate. So what about this next iPad? It will be the third generation of the tablet, but it's...

For generations, reading a picture book worked one way: Place a child on your lap, crack the book's spine, turn the pages and begin narrating the story of Curious George, Max and the wild things or Sam-I-am and his dislike of a certain breakfast. Now that ritual has been upended by the soaring popularity of young children's book apps for the iPad . Earlier this week, eight of the top 10 paid book apps on iTunes were picture books. Today's digital-native children seem keenly interested in a story told to them on a 10-inch screen...

The software, which the company introduced at the Mobile World Congress Barcelona on Monday, promises an experience similar to the separation built into BlackBerry's latest phones. With the new feature, called Knox, users can put a password on some e-mail, browser, contacts, calendars, file-sharing and business apps to keep them behind a protected wall.

The iPad's price tag will start at $800, with WiFi connectivity. Users who want to connect the tablet to cellular networks will pay $929.
