Samsung will be adding a new device to its Galaxy Tab line — a 7-inch tablet set to hit stores in late spring or early summer. The Galaxy Tab 3, with its smaller form, will be another competitor in the mini-tablet market, which includes the iPad mini, Nexus 7, Kindle Fire, Samsung's own Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and, to a lesser extent, its higher-end Galaxy Tab 2 7.7. Samsung did not announce a price for the tablet. But the specifications on the tablet sound mid-range, and indicate that Samsung could be aiming for the lower end of the...

Apple made its iPad mini official on Tuesday, after months of speculation that the company would release a smaller tablet. The new mini tablet has a 7.9-inch display, runs on an A5 chip and was built with the words "light" and "thin" in mind. Here's a look at the pros and cons of Apple's latest gadget. It's portable: At 0.68 pounds and 0.28 inches thick, the tablet is built for portability. That means it's good for commuters and, as Apple made a point of highlighting Tuesday, for kids.

If you plan on buying one of Apple's newly announced iPad mini tablets, you might want to pre-order it soon. The recent patent infringement fight between Samsung and Apple has caused Apple to diversify the number of vendors that supply display panels for all the company's devices. In regards to the iPad mini, Apple is relying on two main vendors — LG and AUO — for display panels, but AUO is having trouble fulfilling its orders, according to Display Search analyst  Richard Shim . "AUO is having yield issues with the 7.9"...

Apple didn't send out invitations for an iPad mini launch event on Wednesday, as had been expected, but that's been barely a hiccup in the rumor mill. Friday's wave of speculation comes courtesy of All Things Digital's John Paczkowski, who suspects that Apple's planning a more intimate launch event for later this month. Citing sources "familiar with Apple's plans," he said that Apple watchers should expect an event on Oct. 23. Since Apple already pulled out all the stops for its iPhone and iPod launch...

Apple's iPad mini is likely getting a better screen in its next iteration, at least according to a report from the Taiwanese tech site Digitimes . The iPad mini does not have the sharp retina-quality display that's been on the last two full-sized iPad models, which has been a main complaint about the smaller tablet. Digitimes, which tries to get a read on Apple's next move by chatting with sources in its supply chain, does have a bit of a spotty record on company rumors. But the latest report, which...

Apple is rumored to be working on an iPad mini, or 7-inch tablet, and a recent post from iMore suggested that the smaller tablet could be slated for an October release. The blog cites an unnamed source who said that Apple might price its smaller tablet aggressively, to push out competitors. The tablet, according to the source, would have the retina display of the third-generation iPad and would make up costs by cutting back on the memory in the mini device — offering just 8 GB. If Apple does offer a smaller...

Acer is planning to launch a $99 tablet in the beginning of next year, according to anonymous sources for the Wall Street Journal . The seven-inch device will run the Android operating system (version 4.1, a.k.a. Jelly Bean) and will reportedly be called the Iconia B1. However, part of the low sticker price is the marketing plan: Acer wants to aim this device at developing markets. It's unknown whether we'll see it in the U.S. — particularly at that price. Seven-inch tablets have been all...

Apple's smartphone marketshare is growing slower than the overall smartphone market, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster said Monday in a research note to investors. That fact will push Apple to release a cheaper iPhone for mass markets. The first statement is clearly true: Android is swiftly winning market share . The second is more controversial: It may well be true … but if so, it's a significant departure for the company. Apple CEO Tim Cook just said in an interview a few weeks ago that ...

iPad mini Pro: Light, portable Con: Less-than-premium display at a premium price Best for: Bed-readers and e-mail junkies Retail price: $329 and up At first pass, it may seem like there's not much to say about the iPad mini. It's the iPad but smaller — 7.9 inches to the full-size 9.7 inches. It's much easier to say what the iPad mini isn't. It's not a computer replacement. It's not an ideal reading device because of screen glare. It's not a phone.
