LONDON, ONTARIO — There will be competitors vying for the men's title at these World Figure Skating Championships who are more elegant. There will be those who are more polished jumpers and more evocative interpreters of music. But there probably won't be a skater who attacks the sport with the ferocity of Max Aaron , 21, a former junior hockey player who makes no apologies for his shortcomings in the often persnickety sport even as he throws himself into addressing them.

NASHVILLE — Coach Bruce Boudreau noticed early on during official workouts that one young prospect wasn't content to simply enjoy his time at Kettler Capitals Iceplex and accept any preconceived conclusion that he couldn't stick with the Washington Capitals this season. In the two weeks since rookie camp opened, Cody Eakin has been all business. He knew coming in that he might be a long shot to reach the NHL at the start of this season, but he has demonstrated...

The other day, my eight-year-old son Max scored a goal in his mite hockey game, raised his stick, and ran down the ice on his tip-toes in a goal celebration that seemed oddly familiar. Afterward, I asked what he was doing. "The Eruzione," he answered. As in Mike Eruzione, captain of the 1980 Olympic hockey team, who did the same move after his game-winning goal against the Soviet Union 30 years ago this month. Max was born a decade after the Soviet Union collapsed, and more than two decades after the "Miracle on Ice" at...

Outside the Washington Capitals locker room, the most feared fighter in the National Hockey League stared at a sealed envelope that had just been handed to him by a reporter. On the front, in neat, cursive writing, a relative whom Donald Brashear has not seen for 18 years, had written simply, "Donald. " Brashear clutched the envelope in his swollen left hand, the hand he has shaped into the cudgel of a fist in 223 fights over 15 violent seasons in the NHL. He thought hard about opening it, whether he wanted to peel back the layers of...
