The buzz throughout Potomac School 's offseason wasn't about which players to start, which offense to run or what team to schedule. It was about whether senior Russell Schmidt should wear jersey number 31 or 91. Schmidt's coaches — defensive coordinator Ian Healy in particular — wanted the quarterback to wear 91, the reason being, Schmidt said, that, "I'm not a real quarterback, so I can't wear a real quarterback's number. " Schmidt, however, wanted to keep 31 from last year — still an unusual number for a signal caller.

In the hours leading up to Saturday's DCSAA championship softball game against Maret , National Cathedral's Kinza Baad was hobbling around on crutches after a pitch hit her in the right foot in Thursday's win against Georgetown Visitation . Baad woke up Saturday morning and took a few ice baths, and reflected on last season, when she missed all but three games with a severe shoulder injury. She wondered aloud if she was going to miss the final game of her high school career before...

Maret Coach Garrett O'Donnell can't recall the last time his team shot lights out from the floor. What he and his players do remember well is that it's been a long time – three years and five games, to be exact – since the Frogs beat Mid-Atlantic Conference rival Sidwell Friends . During Tuesday's home tilt, No. 12 Maret used a memorable performance from the field to erase its nightmarish skid, draining nine three-pointers in a 59-55...

Maret senior right-hander Andrew Culp has a duffel bag in which he stores game balls he earns from standout performances. Culp should have two souvenirs to drop in from Thursday's Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference championship. One for striking out 14 batters in the Frogs' 10-2 win at Flint Hill and another that could have been tracked down over the fence, a home run that highlighted his two-hit, three-RBI effort. Culp allowed no earned runs and five hits to cap an emphatic end of the...

At first, Maret junior Nick Leonard, a smooth-swinging 6-foot-5 left-handed batter, thought the pitch he drilled off of his bat was headed into the right field seats for a two-run home run. It would have given his team the lead in the top of the sixth inning of Sunday's D.C. High School Baseball Classic at Nationals Park. Instead, it hit high off the wall for a stand-up double, driving in the tying run. After Maret was held to three runs through five innings and trailed Wilson by a run, Leonard's hit proved to...

Standing at the top of the key, Maret senior Tre Bowens hesitated for a moment. The 6-foot-4 center's instincts told him to look for a pass and get back to the post, but when he realized the Sidwell Friends defense had sagged away, the shot came quickly and sailed true. The last of Maret's 11 three-pointers, the basket midway through the fourth quarter of Saturday's Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament final helped the Frogs hold off a...

When it comes to Maret 's basketball team, Garrett O'Donnell knows that his roster isn't exactly bursting with star power. Marlon Beck is the only Frogs player to average double-figure points at 12.5 per game and senior forward Tre Bowens , a Towson commit , is more known for his prowess on the football field than the hardwood. But the sum of Maret's many capable parts has produced a 21-2 mark, a 15-game win streak and the top spot in the Mid-Atlantic Conference standings at...

The Potomac School threw a series of new offensive looks at Maret in a 42-7 Mid-Atlantic Conference win on Saturday. The Panthers (3-2, 2-0) lined up with a standard pro-style offense and ran the ball early against the Frogs (3-2, 0-1), then aimed to neutralize Maret defensive end Tre Bowens – who entered the contest with 12 sacks in four games – by putting running backs Johnny Read and Jalen Broom at quarterback and running direct-snaps and misdirection...

The Post should be ashamed of its choice of pictures to accompany the coverage of the Maret vs. Riverdale Baptist baseball game [" Culp settles in as Maret prevails ," Sports, April 24].  This is high school, not professional, sports so  I winced when I saw that The Post printed photographs of a Riverdale player embarrassingly losing the ball in the sun and of another Riverdale player tumbling over a base. I'm sure there were dozens of pictures of good plays The Post could have used.

Since last season, Maret right-hander Andrew Culp has taken up yoga, with an instructor coming to his house twice a week to work on the senior's flexibility and breathing. What Culp really needs is a yoga instructor in the Frogs' dugout, not so much for himself, but to calm coaches and teammates in those in-and-out-of-trouble innings he seems to frequently find himself in. "He likes to live dangerously," senior catcher Austen Maggin said. Culp pitched out of two such gasp-filled, bases-loaded...

No. 8 Flint Hill boasts an interesting combination: One of the most promising young teams in the Washington area and one of the most seasoned coaching staffs. The Huskies (10-2), who usually bat five sophomores and four juniors, are coached by Northern Region veterans Tom Verbanic ( Fairfax baseball and football, Westfield football), Ron Tugwell ( West Springfield ) and Dan Griel ( Lake Braddock ), the latter of whom joined Verbanic and Tugwell partway though last...

Long rain delays hit across the MAC and IAC on Saturday, including an 80-minute holdover that began with about four minutes left in Maret 's game against KIPP . Frogs Coach Mike Engelberg decided to keep the atmosphere light in the school's cramped locker room during the intermission, even allowing his players to mingle with their parents and siblings. The decision to keep his team loose with the unconventional social hour, Engelberg believes, is what saved his team on Saturday...
