FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Mark Sanchez understands the New York Jets' starting quarterback job is still up for grabs. That doesn't mean he expects the final result to be anything different from what it has been the last four seasons: with him under center leading the team every Sunday. "Naturally, as you progress in your career, you try and tighten up and hone in," Sanchez said Thursday after voluntary workouts. "But, like I've said, this is something I dreamed about my whole life and now I'm not planning...

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — David Garrard's balky knee kept him from being a serious challenge for the New York Jets' starting quarterback job. Garrard told SiriusXM NFL Radio on Thursday that his surgically repaired left knee kept swelling up on him after workouts, and that forced him to walk away from the game and consider retirement. "I'd get four or five days of good work on it in and then the next two days it is swollen and I have to do everything I can to get the swelling out," Garrard said.

BALTIMORE — The defense of the Baltimore Ravens reminded its former boss, Rex Ryan, just how thoroughly it can dominate a game. The Ravens scored three touchdowns on defense and managed not to mess things up too badly on offense, coasting to a 34-17 triumph over the Ryan-coached New York Jets here Sunday night at M&T Bank Stadium. The Ravens scored a pair of first-half touchdowns on returns of fumbles by Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez on sacks. They added a...

" james808d via Redskins Insider "I'll tell you what's pathetic: I'm in New York, so I watched Mark Sanchez have a nice first outing as a Jet. Who knows how he'll do the rest of the season, but he's already outperformed JC today. " MrRedskin21 via Redskins Insider

The hiring of Coach Rex Ryan could affect the balance of the division, likely transforming the Jets into a team defined by a blitzing, violent, swarming defense. That is the reason Ryan, the Baltimore Ravens' former defensive coordinator, was brought to New York. New York lacks depth on the defensive line but has talent at linebacker with Vernon Gholston and the addition of Bart Scott, and in the secondary with Darrelle Revis, Kerry Rhodes and newcomer Lito Sheppard. New York has a solid offensive line but not much around it. There is uncertainty at...

NEW YORK — John Idzik is shaking up the New York Jets' front office. A person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Wednesday that neither assistant general manager Scott Cohen nor director of football administration Ari Nissim will have their contracts renewed. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the team had not announced the moves. Both Cohen and Nissim were key members of former GM Mike Tannenbaum's front office. Cohen, who had been...

The Sacramento Kings finally appear to be staying put in California's capital city, possibly ending an emotional saga that has dragged on for nearly three years. The NBA's relocation committee voted unanimously Monday to recommend that owners reject the application for the Kings to relocate to Seattle, the latest — and by far the strongest — in a long line of cities that almost landed the franchise. The 12 league owners on the committee made the decision over a...

When a press conference starts with "you're not going to believe this one," as the one New York Jets coach Rex Ryan led Thursday did, that's never a good sign. Ryan told a stunned group of reporters that he would again be switching quarterbacks, going back to Mark Sanchez after it was announced third-stringer Greg McElroy was being evaluated for a possible concussion. The announcement caps a string of disappointments for Tim Tebow, the pop culture phenom who reportedly held the backup...

So the Denver Broncos have sent quarterback Tim Tebow to the New York Jets , which is akin to dropping the Christian among the lions. It would have been more merciful to send this particular Christian to those other Lions. Tebow in New York? There's just something . . . off about that. Tebow is already saying all the right things — he's Tebowing, if you will — but I'm sure that somewhere deep down inside he'd like to send an Inedible Arrangement to Peyton Manning for putting this particular plan in...

Do it. Get him. Whatever must be done, however much the Redskins have to pay or promise to bring Peyton Manning to Washington, they should offer it. This is one instance in which Dan Snyder needs to be the Dan Snyder we used to know, the check-writer with a signature on the bottom flashier than a fountain. Joe Theismann is wrong that it is a "horrific idea" to go after Manning. This isn't some impulsive grab at a big-name jersey. Manning has absolutely nothing in...
