OAKLAND, Calif. -- Athletics pitcher Clay Mortensen rejoined the team Sunday after spending the night in jail following his arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. Mortensen, acquired in the July trade that sent Matt Holliday to the St. Louis Cardinals, spent Saturday night in the Santa Clara County jail. He was released in time to be with Oakland for Sunday's season finale against the Los Angeles Angels. "I just want to apologize to the A's, my family," Mortensen said.

Barack Obama held a fundraiser last night at Hickory Hill -- the home of Ethel Kennedy in McLean -- that cost $28,500 per person. Only $4,600 of that can go to the campaign -- $2,300 each to his primary and general-election funds. The rest will go to the Democratic National Committee, whose chairman, Howard Dean, also headlined the event.

The July 21 front-page article " Jenny's declaration of independence " concerned a woman with Down syndrome who is fighting to be free of court-ordered supervision. As evidence that Jenny Hatch is unable to care for herself, her parents pointed to her collision with an automobile when she was "riding her bike in the rain at night. " It is not illegal or unusual for people to ride bicycles at night in the rain. People are required to use lights when riding at night, but the article did not say whether Hatch was doing so...
