The man accused of shooting and killing two people in Olney in 2011 will plead not criminally responsible at his trial, his lawyer told Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Cheryl A. McCally Thursday. No trial date has been set for Rohan Goodlett, 37, who was arrested in March 2011 and charged with shooting and killing two people three days apart: Punyasara W. Palkumbure Gedara, 41, and Goodlett's 81-year-old neighbor, Nazir Ahmed. Previously, Goodlett was ruled incompetent to stand trial, but that ruling was reversed in May. He will...

Patrick Boyle's Nov. 13 Local Opinions commentary, " Snapshot of a speed trap, " was exactly what I have wanted to write for some time now. I have been snagged twice in the speed traps on Georgia Avenue entering Olney. As a result, I no longer shop in Olney except on rare occasions. I wonder if the town's merchants are aware that the speed traps are a great disincentive for those who might want to visit their stores. Maybe they could get the speed traps removed or the speed limits raised to a more...

Lorraine Okun of Silver Spring [ letters , Nov. 20] seconded Patrick Boyle's unhappiness [ Local Opinions , Nov. 13] with speeding tickets generated by cameras in Olney. Isn't this a double success? And Ms. Okun suggested that traffic in Olney has been reduced because she and other lead-footed drivers avoid the area.

Moments after pleading guilty Thursday, Kevin Coffay took a seat, dropped his head, and listened to a prosector lay out how drunk he was and how horribly three of his friends died when he crashed a car in Olney at 3 a.m. one day last spring. Front-seat passenger Spencer Datt, 18, was partially thrown from the Toyota. The base of his skull was broken, as were 17 ribs, his spine and pelvis. There were lacerations on all four chambers of his heart. Back-seat passenger Haeley McGuire, 18, was partially thrown from...

The 50-year-old Olney woman stood up in court Thursday, 20 feet from the man prosecutors called the most notorious rapist Montgomery County has ever seen. For 32 years, she said, close friends have known to not come up behind her. She described herself as easily intimidated and nervous — a far cry from the 18-year-old walking home from work in the summer of 1980. That's when the rapist grabbed her from behind, put a gun to her head and forced her into a darkened side yard. "Mr. Buzbee has helped...
