When Jason Hamacher and Jenny Luu's daughter was born in May 2010, things didn't go exactly as planned. Luu had to opt for a Caesarean section rather than the natural delivery she'd hoped for; Hamacher had a wicked cold that quickly worsened. "My head congestion turned into sinus infection and then into chaos" when combined with the challenges of newborn care, Hamacher says. Sleep proved elusive for father, mother and child. "I was horribly sick, and there's an infant, and I'm...

Short Version: There are two kinds of people in the world: those who will wear Vibram Five Finger shoes and those who won't. After a bout with plantar fasciitis and shinsplints, I joined the former camp and feel much better for it. These new shoes, called the VFF KSO (Keep Stuff Out) Trek, add a bit of coverage to what are essentially foot gloves for running, hiking, and looking like a total freak.

To the electrician who last played in high school, to the gym teacher who once played small-college ball, Derrick Rose appears "gutless," a "coward" for failing to lace up his sneakers the past few weeks. Even as Rose's Chicago Bulls teammates and coaches continue to support his decision to allow his surgically repaired knee to heal fully, the chorus continues: If D. Rose has medically been cleared to play by a team doctor, why won't he? Maybe because he's smarter at...

MONDAY, Dec. 1 (HealthDay News) -- Italian researchers say they've developed a fast, effective, non-invasive treatment for the painful foot condition known as plantar fasciitis. Using a combination of "dry-needling" and steroid injections guided by ultrasound, the researchers say their approach achieved a 95 percent success rate in tackling a condition that afflicts about one million Americans every year and accounts for up to 15 percent of all foot problems. "On a long-term basis, patients recover almost completely...

Thomas Porter of Mountain View High School was the top Virginia finisher yesterday at the Foot Locker Nationals, earning all-American honors on the five-kilometer course at Balboa Park in San Diego. Porter finished last in the race in 2007 -- he developed plantar fasciitis in his right foot days before the meet, couldn't quell the pain and struggled to 40th place -- but was healthy and confident yesterday, picking off several of the country's elite distance runners to finish third in 15 minutes 26 seconds.

I thought I'd share this review with the TC audience because you seem like a fit lot and interested in the outdoors. Correct me if I'm wrong. So, we begin:I swore I'd never wear them. We called them the Five Fingers of Suck a few years ago and I was sure they were crazy. Friends, I'm here to tell you I was wrong. And I'm sorry. Here's my story: I ran a marathon a few years ago. I got plantar fasciitis and couldn't run after the marathon. I worked through that inflammation, but by the time I was...

Nene may have been better served to just step into a freezer after each game this season. Over the course of another grueling campaign, the Washington Wizards veteran's nightly recovery routine gradually increased from resting one foot in a bucket of ice to soaking both feet, to covering both knees with ice packs and adding a wrap to cover his sore right shoulder. Tired of maintaining a mummified look as plantar fasciitis in his left foot never fully healed and as soreness in his right knee...

Emeka Okafor had fallen on his backside and looked up at Chicago Bulls forward Carlos Boozer, confused by his 38-second display of overly physical play on Saturday night at Verizon Center. After swinging his arm and knocking down Okafor to earn a flagrant foul on one end of the court, Boozer threw his left shoulder into Okafor's face for a personal foul and then tossed the Washington Wizards center to the ground to collect a technical foul on the other. Okafor shot up to confront Boozer but ...

Ever since the Washington Wizards acquired Nene from Denver, Kevin Seraphin has sought out the veteran big man after games and practices for wisdom and advice. The conversations range from how to defend the pick-and-roll, to tips on footwear and even hairstyles. Nene dishes, Seraphin listens. When Seraphin twisted his hair into a dreadlock starter kit earlier this month, the long-haired Nene suggested that his young pupil try a different look. "Nene don't want anybody but him to...

When the Washington Wizards opened the season in Cleveland with John Wall sidelined because of a stress injury in his left knee and Nene nursing a sore left foot , they expected — or perhaps hoped — that Wall and Nene would be ready when the teams met for a late-December rematch at Verizon Center. Only half of that expectation was met, as Nene took the floor for his second start Wednesday against the Cavaliers . Wall remains out indefinitely and the point guard position...

Of all of the unexpected developments in a season gone awry for the Washington Wizards – from John Wall 's continued absence because of a stress injury to his left knee, to Nene 's continued role as a reserve a month after returning from plantar fasciitis – none is perhaps more astonishing than the team basing its offense on the scoring and playmaking ability of shooting guard turned point guard Jordan Crawford . The injury-induced experiment,...

Season's Greetings, Mamba. The nation's capital gladly welcomes back Kobe Bryant and the Lake Show , an annual drama in American sports. You and that team are essentially the Yankees of pro basketball. If the Washington Wizards had known on opening night that getting their first win was going to require 13 games, four starting lineups, three overtime losses, the firing and hiring of a point guard, the coach openly wondering if he was "dumb," the earlier-than-expected return of a Brazilian big man with a bad left foot, a player-venting session and a fourth-quarter rally after blowing a 15-point lead, then they all should've purchased a Powerball ticket....

Randy Wittman probably feels more flummoxed than he looks these days. His Washington Wizards have been a confusing lot this season, with inconsistent play forcing him to push different buttons and, like a defective vending machine, never get the expected results. Losing has been the only constant, with the Wizards (0-9) off to the worst start in the history of a franchise that has had numerous lean years over the past three decades. "This isn't fun," Wittman said. "You...
