After Orb scored his decisive victory in the Kentucky Derby and was hailed as a bright new star of racing, many handicappers had a reason for skepticism. They had seen this scenario before. The Kentucky Derby often unfolds in a way that gives an advantage to horses rallying from far behind. Lt. Gov. Anthony G. Brown (D), who announced his campaign for governor last week, should get some national television exposure Saturday: He is scheduled to present the trophy to the winner of the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore. Brown has been asked to stand in for Gov. Martin O'Malley (D), who has a family obligation that will keep him from the second leg of horse racing's triple crown for the first time since he becoming governor in 2007, aides to both O'Malley and Brown said.

Fans attending the May 18 Preakness Stakes won't be allowed to bring backpacks into the Pimlico Race Course infield and face further restrictions that have been enacted at Pimlico in response to the bombings at the Boston Marathon two weeks ago . For the first time, all fans entering the gates will undergo an electronic wand search. Items carried into the grandstands or infield will be subject to further searches. And the list of things not permitted has been expanded.
