Navy defensive coordinator Buddy Green is scheduled to interview for the same position at Tennessee on Thursday, multiple people with knowledge of the situation said, but it's unclear whether he would accept the job even if offered. Green has been the Midshipmen's defensive coordinator for 10 seasons, during which he twice was nominated for the Frank Broyles Award presented to the country's top assistant coach of the year. Navy finished 86th nationally in total defense this past season ...

When Howard plays Florida A&M on Thursday night in a nationally televised game, Ed Hill will hover in the press box making sure reporters' needs are met, just as he has the previous 273 games. Hill, who has served as the Bison's sports information director since 1984, hasn't missed a football game during his tenure. Only three active sports information directors have worked more games consecutively than Hill. "A lot of it is just good health," Hill said. "I really enjoy doing what I do. You have your peaks and your valleys, but...

Bullis proudly became one of the first schools to install artificial grass about a decade ago, long before public schools in Montgomery County were trying to decide between Bermuda or Spin turf inside their stadiums. The turf at Bullis was glued however, not sewn, and Coach Pat Cilento knows where all the rough spots on the field are. But even with the wear and tear, Bullis defensive end Peter Angeh loves his home playing surface, and on a night when the Bulldogs' offense struggled to find...

TAMPA -- In the sober cathedral of nobility otherwise be known as the Super Bowl media center, there has always been a certain scorn among the gentry for those who pollute our chambers with frivolity. It is for this reason we disdain the annual bazaar known as Super Bowl media day with all its sideshow characters desperate for a glimmer of fame: A TV reporter in a wedding dress? How dare she trample our hallowed soil. We are the media, of course, and in these troubled times we must deliver the necessary...

"You still want me to sing?" asks Dunbar junior Monique Garey, 16, as she walks quickly toward the press box.  It's less than five minutes before kickoff and Garey, the school's usual national anthem singer has just gotten to the field.  Up in the press box, there was a backup recording ready to play just in case.  "You're the national anthem lady," joked the announcer as the two headed toward the ramp up to the press box. Last year,...

STATE COLLEGE, Pa., Nov. 22 -- Regardless of whether he stays or goes, Joe Paterno has Penn State back atop the Big Ten and headed to the Rose Bowl. Daryll Clark threw for career highs of 341 yards and four touchdowns, and a stingy defense held Javon Ringer to a season-low 42 yards as the No. 7 Nittany Lions clinched a BCS bid with a 49-18 victory against No. 17 Michigan State on Saturday. Coaching again from the press box because of a sore hip, Paterno surely smiled after Penn State secured a share of the conference title...

This is how meaningful the fourth exhibition of every NFL season is: Not only did all 22 offensive and defensive starters take the night off — so did a few reserves. And so, evidently, did Jason Reid . So it was a big chance for Kirk Cousins and me to strut our stuff. Poor Kirk. He thinks he can move up to second on the quarterback depth chart behind Robert Griffin III. Doesn't he know he will never get by the original RGIII? Beating out Rex Daniel Grossman III for No. 2 is crazy-man...

BALTIMORE — After his first three impressive starts this season, Baltimore Orioles right-hander Jake Arrieta was most pleased with his ability to pitch into the seventh inning, something he did just once in his final seven starts last year. In Friday's 5-2 loss to the Oakland A's , however, Arrieta stumbled early and couldn't pitch deep. It was the second consecutive time he's failed to get through the sixth inning. Not coincidentally, it also was the second straight loss for...

No matter how much Sylvester Stallone has tried, some things in boxing you just can't make up. It was enough late Saturday night that a 27-year-old man from Southeast, homeless before a boxing trainer took him and his little brother in when the boy was 10, rocked the fight world by winning his first major world title over the prohibitive favorite. But when ring announcer Michael Buffer hollered the words, "And . . . NEW SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD . . .

Look, enough already. So the 2011 Boston Red Sox were as dysfunctional as a Kardashian family reunion . Fine. But even I have a hard time believing Josh Beckett , John Lackey and Jon Lester — or any other Red Sox — were drinking beer in the dugout . I'm sure a lot of players have, from time to time, wanted a beer in the dugout. I just think it would be pretty hard to get away with it. A baseball dugout is full of people, not just players, but batboys, trainers, coaches, a manager.

On Jan. 13, the Caps came back from three goals down to beat the Florida Panthers on the road. Quintin Laing took eight shifts, totaling about six minutes of ice time, during the win. And then? "And the next 13 I've had a good seat for," Laing joked after Tuesday morning's practice. The winger was a healthy scratch the next time his team took the ice. The Caps put up six goals against Toronto in that game. And as Washington put together the longest winning streak in franchise history -- 14 and...

Blog excerpt from washingtonpost.com/discussions Question Answer Potomac: Who is more likely to have played their last game in a Washington, D.C., uniform: Clinton Portis or Gilbert Arenas? A: Portis has more chance to be back. The Redskins have so many holes to fill that I think [Mike] Shanahan will try to give Portis one last chance to prove that age and NFL combat haven't turned him into Clinton Tortoise. And, like any fading diva, he has to be told that he can't...
