The biggest news about the Washington Redskins actually doesn't involve quarterback Robert Griffin III's reconstructed right knee . It's still way too early to tell when Griffin will be ready to play — the Redskins are waiting to find out just like everyone else. What is interesting are the changes on offense the team is expected to make to accommodate Griffin. Coach Mike Shanahan isn't one to reveal what he ate for breakfast, let alone pull back the curtain on his plans for the Redskins.

PRO FOOTBALL Redskins sign more draft picks The Washington Redskins signed second-round draft pick David Amerson , a cornerback, and fourth-round pick Phillip Thomas , a safety, to their rookie contracts on Friday. Taken 51st overall out of North Carolina State, Amerson was Washington's first pick of the 2013 draft. Terms of his deal were not disclosed, but Amerson's contract will be of similar worth to the one of last year's 51st overall pick. That pick, Green Bay defensive tackle Jerel Worthy ,...

ASHBURN, Va. — The Washington Redskins signed second-round draft pick David Amerson and fourth-round choice Phillip Thomas on Friday, leaving one of their seven selections without a rookie deal: Florida tight end Jordan Reed. Amerson is a cornerback from North Carolina State who was the 51st overall pick last month, Washington's highest because it traded its first-rounder to the St. Louis Rams in the deal that brought quarterback Robert Griffin III to the Redskins. In 2011, Amerson...

ASHBURN, Va. — The Washington Redskins have signed seventh-round draft pick Jawan Jamison, a running back from Rutgers. He was the 228th overall selection in last month's draft after leaving college as a redshirt sophomore. Jamison ran for 1,075 yards last season, limited by a bone bruise in his right ankle. His rookie deal was announced Thursday by the Redskins. Jamison is the fourth drafted player the Redskins signed this week, along with linebacker Brandon Jenkins, safety...

ASHBURN, Va. — The Washington Redskins have signed fifth-round draft pick Chris Thompson and free-agent receiver Lance Lewis. The deals were announced Wednesday. Thompson is a running back who was injured for much of his college career at Florida State. He broke two vertebrae during the 2011 season and tore the ACL in his left knee last year. He's the third drafted player signed by the Redskins this week, joining linebacker Brandon Jenkins and safety Bacarri Rambo. ...

ASHBURN, Va. — The Washington Redskins have signed fifth-round draft pick Brandon Jenkins and sixth-round selection Bacarri Rambo. They're the first two players under contract with the Redskins from last month's draft. Jenkins played defensive end at Florida State but the Redskins plan to use him as a linebacker. He missed nearly the entire 2012 season after breaking his left foot in the opening game. Rambo is a safety from Georgia. He failed two drug tests in...

This is my first Mother's Day without my mother, Judy McCartney. She passed away in October at 85 after a lengthy but mostly pain-free struggle with a bum valve in her heart. Mom disdained Mother's Day. She rolled her eyes at anything smacking of drippy sentiment. She objected that the holiday was artificial and mercenary. "I've got a bad attitude about Mother's Day," Mom would say. "It's phony baloney, invented to sell flowers and greeting cards. " I smile when I remember that tirade,...

If the Washington Redskins are right about rookie safety Bacarri Rambo , the sixth-rounder may wind up being a draft steal. If the Redskins are wrong about the former Georgia star, who had drug problems in college, Rambo's off-field behavior could derail his NFL career. It will not, however, derail the Redskins. The reason is simple: stability. Coach Mike Shanahan created it. By drafting well and making sound decisions, for the most part, in free agency, Shanahan transformed the Redskins from...

With their three-day rookie minicamp in the books, Washington Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said Sunday he was encouraged by the early impressions made by defensive backs David Amerson, Phillip Thomas and Bacarri Rambo. Drafted in the second, fourth and sixth rounds, respectively, to help upgrade a secondary that struggled last season, Amerson, Thomas and Rambo — as well as their four fellow draft selections, 12 undrafted free agent additions and 48 tryout players — received a crash course in Washington's playbook.

A week after hearing his name called during the second night of the NFL draft, cornerback David Amerson will get his first taste of pro football this weekend when the Washington Redskins ' draft picks and undrafted free agents take part in rookie minicamp. Over the next three days, the players — who reported to Redskins Park on Thursday — will go through a series of classroom sessions and five practices as they receive their introduction to Washington's playbook. Washington selected Amerson...
