In two games, Santana Moss, the Redskins' top wide receiver, has caught five passes for 41 yards. Only once, during a 79-catch 2008, did Moss go through a two-week stretch in which he caught fewer balls. "That's something that the team got to deal with. I'm a player," Moss said Thursday. "I'm going to want more. But what can I do about it? All I can do is just keep doing my job. Maybe they'll see me one day. Y'all watch football. Y'all know what's going on. I don't have to sit here and tell you that I need something more.

As the NFL's free agency signing period got underway on Tuesday, the salary-cap strapped Washington Redskins ' moves were limited to restructuring veteran wide receiver Santana Moss's contract and re-signing punter Sav Rocca to a two-year deal. Meanwhile, the team appeared to be on the verge of losing linebacker Lorenzo Alexander, a Pro Bowler on special teams, because it lacked the resources to compete with opposing teams interested in his services. Despite releasing...

After 11 seasons of NFL service, Santana Moss continues to remake himself. The latest version of the Washington Redskins wide receiver comes to training camp considerably lighter and more nimble, bent on recovering from his least productive season as a starter. At 33, Moss is the elder statesman among Washington's wide receivers and second in tenure to Chris Cooley on the offense. Pierre Garcon, Leonard Hankerson and Josh Morgan , the young bucks contending with Moss for playing time, have fewer years in...

The Washington Redskins are not going to the Super Bowl this year, but one of their biggest fans is. Hunter Paulin, a fourth-grader from Indian Head, Maryland, won the NFL Play 60 Super Bowl contest. That means Hunter, his parents and his older brother Brandon will be flying to New Orleans for the big game. Hunter will run onto the field and hand the ball to a game official before the opening kickoff on February 3. NFL Play 60 is a program in which the National Football League, along with the...

It really wasn't a demotion. Coach Mike Shanahan made that clear to Santana Moss during the offseason while explaining how Moss's role would change in the Washington Redskins ' revamped receiving corps. The Redskins still needed Moss, Shanahan assured him, just in a different way. "When a guy has been as successful as Santana, and worked as hard as he has to help your football team, it can be difficult when you say, ‘We're going to try something else now,' " Shanahan said.

While the Redskins locked up wide receiver Santana Moss for three more seasons, quarterback Donovan McNabb 's tenure in Washington appears to be nearing its conclusion. The veteran quarterback could soon be bound for Minnesota. The Redskins and the Vikings agreed to the framework of a trade late Tuesday night, according to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, though the deal was contingent on McNabb restructuring his contract. In exchange for McNabb, the Redskins would...

When Santana Moss sits at his locker at Redskins Park and glances around the room, he can't help but notice how different it looks compared to when he first got there in 2005. A lot of notable names have come and gone from the Washington Redskins ' roster since Joe Gibbs traded a disgruntled Laveranues Coles to the New York Jets in exchange for Moss. Clinton Portis, LaVar Arrington, Chris Samuels, Sean Taylor, Mike Sellers, Shawn Springs, Mark Brunell, Patrick...

The Washington Redskins' losses in the locker room are outpacing their woes in the standings, as two more key offensive contributors joined their growing list of injured players Monday. Coach Mike Shanahan said that running back Tim Hightower tore the ACL in his left knee in Sunday's 33-20 loss at Carolina and will be placed on season-ending injured reserve. Wide receiver Santana Moss should return this season, but he'll be out five to seven weeks after...

When Santana Moss lined up with 1 minute 15 seconds left in Sunday's 34-27 loss to the New England Patriots , he should have been in a comfortable, familiar spot. He was the Washington Redskins ' slot receiver, stationed off the line of scrimmage — in this case, the New England 5-yard line — to the right of quarterback Rex Grossman. He knew he would run an out route toward the right pylon, and if Grossman could roll to his right and come free, the...

The correct call was obvious to almost everyone who watched Robert Griffin III drag his right leg around FedEx Field on Sunday night. But Washington Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan chose not to see it. Shanahan should have pulled Griffin early from Washington's 24-14 playoff loss to Seattle . No matter how much Griffin protested — and the competitive star surely would have — Shanahan could have ordered Griffin to take a seat long before...

Kai Forbath chose the life of a kicker, and for the first five weeks of this NFL season that meant unemployment. He lived off the money he made last year on the Dallas Cowboys' injured reserve. He paid no rent, living at home with his parents in Los Angeles and staying some nights at his girlfriend's apartment. Forbath worked out with a trainer and practiced kicking three days a week, a college friend holding the ball for him. He played golf many days and cooked dinner with...

Mike Shanahan stood near midfield with a rolled-up sheet of paper in his hand, chatting purposefully with a couple of members of the cadre of loyal assistant coaches who surround him. He watched intently as his franchise quarterback, the one with the otherworldly gifts that make Super Bowl triumphs seem well within reach, and his workhorse running back, stolen in the sixth round of the NFL draft, went through their practice-field routines. It could have been 1998 in Denver. But it wasn't.

He came in with a plan, and the plan was to have no plan, or at least not one that was obvious. In the NFL, they can sniff out a wannabe-leader, a bold-faced climber, a fraud from a mile away. All the way back in the spring, Robert Griffin III knew he wanted to make the Washington Redskins his team, that he needed to do so — to mold it to his will — in order to take the franchise where he wanted to take it. But he had to do it the right way — slowly,...
