CORNWALL, N.Y. — Most compact sedans with small four-cylinder engines stumble up Mine Hill Road here, which rises nearly 1,500 feet above sea level. It matters not the manufacturer. Small cars that might have zoomed along the nearby Palisades Interstate Parkway or adjacent Interstate 87 suddenly turn timid when beginning the climb up winding, twisting Mine Hill Road. They cough, stutter and stumble, a motorized whining that becomes especially evident if they are carrying cargo weighing 200 pounds or more.

Bottom line: Poor Lincoln. The luxury division of Ford Motor Co. is in such a hurry to regain what it considers lost prestige, it constantly overlooks the value and quality of what it has in hand. Such is the case with the 2013 Lincoln MKZ AWD sedan, perhaps the most erroneously marketed of all new automobiles. Lincoln needs to stop wasting money and time chasing "prestige" buyers with this one. Instead, it needs to make an acquaintance with the middle class, which appreciates value beautifully rendered.

The aesthetic goal was to elevate engineering to art. But Mazda partly missed that mark in its 2014 redevelopment of the Mazda 6 Grand Touring sedan, the subject of this week's review. There is little about the new Mazda 6 that is visually impressive. It is not ugly. But it isn't memorable or seductive either.

It all means the BMW M5 sedan, completely reworked for 2013, is wonderfully out of sync with everyday driving. The car is ridiculously fast. Equipped with its standard twin-turbocharged, 4.4-liter, aluminum V-8 gasoline engine (560...

Bottom line: The Sonata, with a major restyling for the 2012 model year, has undergone modest revisions for 2013. A manual gearbox is no longer available in the base GLS model. A six-speed automatic transmission that also can be operated manually is standard. The Sonata, especially the top-of-the-line Limited, remains one of the best buys available among midsize family sedans. Head-turning quotient: Among the best in the business. Ride, acceleration and handling: It gets good marks in all three.
