BALTIMORE, Sept. 26 -- Right-hander Dennis Sarfate will undergo shoulder surgery on Tuesday for a clavicle fracture he suffered in an early-season freak accident. Angels RHP Kelvim Escobar will have season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum in his pitching shoulder. Escobar and the Angels made the decision yesterday after consulting with team physician Lewis Yokum and a shoulder specialist in New York. "We all saw how hard Kelvim worked through spring," Manager Mike Scioscia said. "We all felt there was no question he was going to pitch for us in some capacity this year. " Escobar instead will have surgery this month to correct the pain in his shoulder.

Washington Nationals pitching prospect Josh Smoker underwent shoulder surgery to remove a bone spur, the team announced yesterday. He is expected to be healthy in time for spring training. Smoker, Washington's supplemental round pick in the 2007 draft, pitched 44 1/3 innings last season between rookie ball and Class A Hagerstown. The left-hander finished 2-5 with a 5.48 ERA in 11 games. Considering his age (he turns 20 on Nov. 26) and light workload, it is unclear when the injury occurred.

So London Fletcher had ankle surgery ; he's planning on undergoing elbow surgery soon, and then intends to play a 16th season in the NFL , a season in which he'll be 38 years old. Fletcher doesn't have a portrait of Dorian Gray in his attic. He has Dorian Gray's X-rays. Even Gray's portrait would show some wear and tear after 15 NFL seasons, and Fletcher is as well.
