A Prince George's County police officer was charged criminally with theft and misconduct in office Monday, accused of trying to swipe an expensive camera from the department's property warehouse, authorities said. Four men were arrested in the theft of money last week from an armored van in Montgomery County that a source said might have involved as much as $500,000. County police said the theft occurred July 5 in Wheaton near the Westfield Wheaton mall. After money was left in the van's cab instead of the rear compartment, the van door was opened and the money was taken, police said. The four were charged with theft of more than $500 and conspiracy to commit theft of more than $500, police said.

Metro Transit Police said Wednesday that they've arrested two current and two former transit agency employees on allegations that they logged time they did not work. The four have been charged with theft and conspiracy to commit theft, said Metro Transit Deputy Police Chief Erhart Olson. Those arrested were former workers Alfred Atanga, 50, of Bowie and Lakisha Gardin, 34, of Forestville and current employees Empriss Jacobs, 28, of Fort Washington and Keesha Richardson, 32, of Upper Marlboro.

Thieves have been stepping up efforts to snatch purses and handbags hanging from the backs of chairs in many Washington restaurants and nightclubs, D.C. police said. In an alert issued Tuesday, police warned that the city's 2nd Police District, which includes the Georgetown area, recently has seen an increase in such crimes. Those who have been stealing the bags or their contents are "very skilled," police said, and seem to have practiced their larcenous techniques before applying them.
