It finally happened! All three escalators at the north entrance of the Dupont Circle Metro station were closed for several days this month, and all three at the Van Ness-UDC Station were out of order when I got off the train on Dec. 17. Some of the deepest stations -- Rosslyn, Dupont Circle, Tenleytown-AU, Van Ness, Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan and Friendship Heights -- have three or four escalators. They are seldom needed at the same time, and I suspect that, because these escalators are very long and thus somewhat...

I'm not going to let someone get a tattoo they're going to regret," says the star of the TLC series "NY Ink" and "America's Worst Tattoos. " New seasons of both shows launched Thursday night on TLC. I'm as powerless as anyone to look away from " Here Comes Honey Boo Boo ," TLC's new reality series about Alana Thompson, a 6-year-old kiddie pageant contestant from rural Georgia, and the boisterous clan what done gave birth to her. For most of my career I've been trying to combine two elements in television that seem to be at odds — excellent programs about science and ratings. It's conventional wisdom that those two can never meet in the middle. I don't accept that. I've always tried to show the drama of science and adventure. Like a lot of people in Washington, I grew up somewhere else — in my case, overseas in Germany and London. My dad worked for PanAm. A lot of us expatriates grow up as little anthropologists.

The opinion was a victory for Silver Spring-based Discovery Communications, which owns TLC. The contract "has been breached time and time again by Mr. Gosselin," Paul Gaffney, an attorney for TLC, said after the ruling.
