Monica Wright scored 22 points and No. 15 Virginia used a big second half to put away Saint Francis (Pa.) last night, 82-66, at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville. It was the eighth straight victory for the Cavaliers, who are unbeaten at home this season. "I felt like the start of the game was a little uninspired," Virginia Coach Debbie Ryan said. "Give Saint Francis a lot of credit. We want to be playing a little better when we head into the Wake Forest game and then on to North Carolina.

Dick Trickle , a former NASCAR driver whose larger-than-life personality and penchant for fun won him legions of fans despite a lack of success beyond the nation's small tracks, died Thursday of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said. He was 71. The Lincoln County (N.C.) Sheriff's Office said authorities received a call believed to be from Trickle, who said "there would be a dead body and it would be his. " Authorities tried to call the number back, but no one answered.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The New York Jets have claimed wide receiver Marcus Davis off waivers from the New York Giants and released wide receiver Antavious Wilson. Davis, who signed with the Giants as an undrafted free agent last week, was released last Saturday. He had 105 catches for 1,827 yards and 13 touchdowns in four seasons at Virginia Tech, including a team-leading 51 receptions for 953 yards and five scores last season. Wilson signed last week with the Jets and participated in rookie camp.
